Understanding when to reach out to the Internal Revenue Service can save you time, money, and significant stress during tax season and beyond. Many taxpayers are unsure about whether they need to contact the IRS directly or whether their issue can be resolved through other channels. Here is a comprehensive overview of the most common situations that warrant contacting the IRS and the best way to handle each one.
One of the most frequent reasons taxpayers contact the IRS is to check the status of their tax refund. If it has been more than 21 days since you e-filed your return (or more than 6 weeks since you mailed a paper return) and you have not received your refund, you should use the "Where's My Refund?" tool on irs.gov or call the automated refund hotline at 1-800-829-1954. Keep your Social Security number, filing status, and exact refund amount handy when checking.
Another important reason to contact the IRS is if you receive a notice or letter. The IRS sends millions of notices each year regarding a variety of topics, including changes to your return, balance due reminders, requests for additional information, and identity verification letters. It is critical that you respond to IRS notices promptly, as failing to respond can result in penalties, interest charges, or even enforcement actions such as liens and levies. Always read the notice carefully, follow the instructions provided, and contact the IRS at the phone number listed on the notice if you have questions.
You should also contact the IRS if you:
Cannot pay your tax bill in full — The IRS offers installment agreements and other payment options. It is far better to set up a payment plan than to ignore a tax bill, which can lead to escalating penalties and collection actions.
Need to correct a previously filed return — File an amended return using Form 1040-X. You can track the status of an amended return using the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool on irs.gov.
Are a victim of tax-related identity theft — If someone has filed a fraudulent return using your Social Security number, contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490 immediately.
Need a copy of a past tax return or transcript — Transcripts are often needed for mortgage applications, student financial aid, and loan approvals. Use the Get Transcript tool online for the fastest results.
Have questions about tax law or filing requirements — The IRS provides free assistance through its toll-free phone lines, Taxpayer Assistance Centers, and the VITA/TCE programs for qualifying individuals.
Need to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) — New businesses, trusts, and estates need an EIN. You can apply online for free at irs.gov, or call 1-800-829-4933 for assistance.
If you are experiencing a financial hardship or believe the IRS is not treating you fairly, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS that exists specifically to help taxpayers resolve problems. You can reach TAS at 1-877-777-4778 or visit one of their offices located in every state. TAS can help with issues such as delayed refunds that are causing financial hardship, disputes over tax assessments, and cases where normal IRS channels have not resolved your problem.
Before contacting the IRS by phone, prepare yourself for potentially long wait times during peak periods (January through April). Consider using the online tools at irs.gov first, as many common tasks — such as checking your refund status, making a payment, or downloading forms — can be completed faster online than by phone. When you do call, have your Social Security number, prior year tax return, and any IRS correspondence available to expedite the process.
